Australian artist Billy Gruner has been invited to show his first solo exhibition in Europe at H29. A graduate of visual arts from Sydney University, Gruner also holds a PhD in visual art theory and runs an independent space in Sydney called SNO (Sydney Non Objective).
Understood since 1995 as a radical monochrome painter, Gruner also engages in what he describes as post formalist sculpture, video and installation art within the wider Australian arena. Here the subject of formalist ideas after post-modernism is defined within a regional understanding. In this way Gruner claims to make work that is intended to exist outside of contemporary concerns and a renowned bias towards figuration.
Gruners ‘Modular’ show consists of a set of painted objects, constructed on site out of available material (aluminium, MDF, lacquer). Being concerned with collective and developmental approaches, he has designed these works to be altered or changed during the exhibition.
The artist currently works also at ‘UND’ as well as Chiellerie Gallery, Amsterdam’ and shows ‘the secession files’ at the Hotel Winston, Amsterdam.
