Maike
Mei Lan23-06-2007 - 21-07-2007
The play between art, design and architecture in Maike Mei Lan’s work is reminiscent of the spirit derived from De Stijl. Her work advances formal ideas from the tradition of geometrical abstract art and minimalism in order to open up new visual and dimensional rhythms in time and space. The installation Pink Rabbit inaugurates a shift in Mei Lan’s oeuvre: the potential that figuration can exert over formal abstraction. To this end, Maike Mei Lan’s alter ego is represented as a Manga character on the wall. The use of an avatar perhaps aims at restoring the object of mass production from our over-exhausted economy of goods. It projects a balance between three- and two-dimensionality, between seeing the object and not.
