SURPLUS The manifesto
Jasper van der Graaf, Jan Maarten Voskuil and Thomas Wildner, Brussels, 10 June 2006
We give short shrift to the cynical ‘I’ era of the last thirty years, our perverted society of unrestrained individualism and cultural decay.
The navel gazing must be inverted. Away with hysterical handwriting, away with psychologizing. We keep our emotional lives to ourselves.
We must join forces to excel, stand on each others’ shoulders to stand out from the crowd, pile up our knowledge and skills. Only then will art progress.
Modernism led to reductionism, minimalism and zero. Following the dark age of defeatism it is time to let the frittered away merits of the past resound once more through a forward-looking gaze.
In our manipulative and mendacious times we are forced to make art that is tangible and true. Imitation is pointless to us. We produce without unnecessary frills.
In a complex reality we have to seek simple and pragmatic solutions.
Art is surplus. The surplus value and the waste of existence.
